As a home-school dad, I am always looking for efficient and effective curriculum ideas for my kids. I found that in an online app called pianomarvel. This app offers piano lessons that allow the user an efficient and effective means to learn to play the piano very quickly. It is most effectively used with a digital piano/keyboard that has a USB to computer connection, midi connection or Bluetooth. I use midi with my older keyboard but the main method of connection is USB. The app connects to your keyboard and interactively grades your songs and exercises. It is also possible to use this program manually.

My family has a hard time conforming to schedules. When I looked into getting personal lessons for my daughter, I realized it would be extremely hard for her to attend these lessons consistently. I did an internet search for online piano lesson resources and found pianomarvel.com. I decided we would both use this app. This app allows the new student to get free access to the entire sight for a month. My goal was to stay ahead of her so I could act as a guide and mentor. We have both progressed fairly rapidly in the first two months, and this has been such a success, I have included my son in this piano learning initiative.

How the the pianomarvel app works

Upon startup of the pianomarvel application, you’ll notice you’re logged into the dashboard which is the home screen. On the dashboard and you’ll see four main sections: a library section sight-reading, method, and technique. The beauty of pianomarvel is that all of the musical pieces are digitally transcribed. With your keyboard connected to the program, the app can keep track of the correct or incorrect notes you hit a given time signature (link to time signature wiki). It’s this connectivity that reduces the amount of time you need to learn piano significantly.

Advantages of using a keyboard computer interface

1. The library section has thousands of songs to choose from that are digitally transcribed and there are many workbooks and boot camps to choose from.
2. The piano method section has 1200 exercises and songs that teach rhythm and note basics.
3. The technique section is where you practice rhythm, scales, chord cadences, and ear training.
4. The last section is the standard assessment of sight-reading (wiki link to piano sight reading) or SASR. The SASR is a piano sight-reading test that also teaches you to sight-read better. Each time you take the SASR test you will get a sight-reading score and a chart showing your sight-reading progress.
5. These exercises and songs include a really powerful mode called practice mode that is accessed at the bottom of the app. In practice mode you get help to practice a specific piece. Practice mode takes you through what you are playing systematically: right hand, then left hand, then both hands through sections of the piece. You completely practice one section then move on to the next. Something that seems daunting initially is broken up in blocks and is eventually able to be mastered quickly (this is relative to the size and complexity of song or exercise) and efficiently.

Piano Lesson Progress in two months

In 2 months my daughter has completed over 200 songs and exercises and is playing with hands together; my son has completed over 80 songs and exercises and is playing left and right hand separately while focusing on learning new notes and rhythms, and I have completed over 420 exercises and songs with 100% accuracy. I am starting the third level that so far includes playing major and minor chords with the left hand and or right hand with the ability to play chords and melody simultaneously with hands together. I am extremely proud of everyone’s progress and am amazed by how the merging of technological and analog teaching methods has helped us progress much farther than anticipated.

My son, who only practices 3 or 4 times a week for 15-20 minutes a time has made significant progress with almost no oversight by me. I just let him do his thing and congratulate him on his great progress. As my daughter’s progress is more advanced, I keep a closer ear and eye on her practice to give minor suggestions to try and help her through trouble spots that I have found.

Pianomarvel is great if you want to start lessons but don’t have the time to find a teacher in your area.
